What’s Really Under Your Shingles: Underlayment, Felt and Ice-and-Water Shield Explained
A plain-English guide to the water barrier hiding beneath every Calgary roof, and why the details matter more than most homeowners realize.
When you look up at a roof, you see shingles: the colour, the texture, maybe the brand name on the wrapper if you were around for delivery. What you don’t see is the layer underneath doing most of the actual work when something goes wrong. That layer has a name most homeowners have never heard explained properly: underlayment. It functions as your roof’s second line of defense, the barrier that catches water getting past the shingles during wind-driven rain, a cracked shingle, or an ice dam. On a Calgary roof, where Chinook winds can strip shingles loose in an afternoon and ice dams form most winters, that second line matters more than it does in almost any other Canadian city.

None of it is complicated once someone explains it in plain terms.
What Underlayment Actually Does (And What It Doesn’t)
Most homeowners assume underlayment is basically a moisture wrap, similar to what goes behind siding, there mostly to insulate. It isn’t. Underlayment is a secondary water barrier. If wind drives rain up under a shingle tab, if a shingle cracks or blows off and nobody notices for a few weeks, or if ice backs up under a shingle course during a thaw, the underlayment is what keeps that water off your roof deck instead of soaking into the plywood underneath. It also protects the bare deck during the install itself, before the shingles go on, which matters more than people think given how often a Calgary job gets interrupted partway through by weather.
What underlayment does not do is replace proper flashing, proper attic ventilation, or a sound roof deck underneath it. Some homeowners assume a premium underlayment product fixes weak points elsewhere on the roof. It doesn’t. It’s one layer in a larger system, and if the flashing or ventilation is wrong, no underlayment on the market saves you from ice damming or slow rot down the line. Its weaknesses are real: felt tears easily if a crew walks it in wet or cold conditions, it wrinkles once it absorbs moisture, and on a hot day it can feel slick underfoot, which is its own safety concern on a steep pitch.
Synthetic underlayment, usually a woven polypropylene sheet, costs more per square but tears less, stays flatter in wet weather, and gives a crew better footing on a steep Calgary roof. It also holds up to UV exposure better if a job gets delayed and the deck sits open longer than planned, which happens more often than any contractor likes to admit once a hailstorm has half the city’s crews booked solid. Felt isn’t obsolete, and synthetic isn’t magic. Ice-and-Water Shield: Where It Actually Belongs
Ice-and-water membrane is a self-adhered rubberized sheet, thicker and stickier than either felt or synthetic underlayment, and it seals tight around nail penetrations instead of just shedding water over them. It costs more per square than standard underlayment, so it doesn’t go across an entire roof deck. It gets used in the spots where water is most likely to back up or where a roof detail creates a weak point:
- Along the eaves, extending up past the interior wall line
- In roof valleys, where two slopes funnel water into one channel
- Around chimneys, skylights, and plumbing stacks
- At low-slope sections and roof transitions where water moves slower
Each of these spots handles more water, more often, or more standing water than the open field of the roof. That’s why they get the upgraded membrane instead of standard underlayment, and why a contractor should be able to name each location without hesitation.
Why the Eave Detail Matters for Chinook Ice Damming
Calgary’s winter pattern is unusual. A Chinook wind can push the temperature from minus twenty to plus five within hours, melt snow sitting on a roof, and then let it refreeze overnight once the wind dies down. That freeze-thaw cycle, repeated a dozen times or more each winter, is exactly the condition that creates an ice dam: a ridge of ice at the eave that backs meltwater up under the shingles above it. Without ice-and-water membrane at the eave, that backed-up water has nothing between it and your roof deck except a nailed-down layer of felt or synthetic, and neither is built to handle standing water sitting against it for hours at a stretch. Ice-and-water shield at the eave isn’t an upsell on a Calgary home. It’s close to mandatory, and it’s one of the first things worth checking on a quote before you sign anything.
Why ‘Full Coverage Everywhere’ Isn’t Automatically Better
Some contractors pitch full-deck ice-and-water coverage as a premium option, and on paper it sounds like more protection can only help. In practice it can create a different problem. Ice-and-water membrane is close to vapour-impermeable. On certain roof assemblies, particularly older homes with limited attic ventilation or insulation added in stages over the years, sealing the entire deck under an impermeable membrane can trap moisture that would otherwise dry out through the sheathing over time. That trapped moisture tends to show up later as sheathing rot you can’t see from the attic side until it’s already advanced.
This isn’t true of every home. On a newer build with solid ventilation, full coverage may be perfectly fine. The point is that more coverage isn’t automatically the better answer, and a contractor who recommends targeted placement based on your specific attic and ventilation setup, rather than blanket coverage as a standard upsell, is giving you the more honest read on your own house.
Reading a Quote and the Drip Edge Sequencing
Most roofing quotes list underlayment as a single line, sometimes without naming which product is actually being used. That’s not enough detail to compare two quotes against each other fairly. Ask specifically what underlayment goes down, whether ice-and-water membrane is included at the eaves and valleys, and how many feet up the slope it runs. Then ask about sequencing. Drip edge, the metal flashing along the eaves and rakes, should go down underneath the ice-and-water membrane at the eave and on top of it at the rakes, so water sheds off the metal edge instead of getting trapped behind it. A crew that skips this order, or installs drip edge over everything as an afterthought, is cutting a corner that won’t show up as a problem for a year or two, which is exactly why it gets cut in the first place.
It’s also fair to ask how the crew checks the deck itself before any underlayment goes down. A soft or delaminated section under old shingles won’t get caught by underlayment choice alone, and a contractor who mentions checking the deck as a matter of course, not as an upsell raised after the fact, is describing normal, careful practice rather than a sales tactic.
Ask to See It, Not Just Hear About It
Underlayment and ice-and-water shield are two of the least glamorous parts of a roofing job, and two of the parts most likely to get vague treatment on a quote. A straight answer costs a contractor nothing. If a roofer can’t tell you which underlayment product they use, whether ice-and-water shield is included at your eaves and valleys, or how the drip edge sequencing works, that’s worth noticing before you sign anything.
